For the Jura of Swiss, the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron have designed a concerthall that reminds according to the architects to the Scheunen (Barns) in the region. But its form obviously also reminds also to the ancient (Egyptian) pyramids and the mountains of the Alps, such as the Mont Blanc.

The Dutch architect Neutelings Riedijk send in a design that uses the iconography of the Adidas Logo. Instead of placing the 3 gyms next to each other Neutelings Riedijk have stacked them. The height of the trusses is used to accommodate dressing rooms, wellness areas and health care. Indeed, very OMA. Stacking is definitely not a very practical solution at this generous site (prolonged walking routes, expensive construction), but the resulting high building might function as a landmark at the Adidas campus. The image-language of the Adidas ‘Performance’ Logo is echoed in the three ‘bars’ that function as stairs at back, the painted bars at the side, and the stepped façade at the front.

Spiegle Online reported that Russian gas giant Gazprom (owner of 16% of the world’s gas reserves) is expanding into Europe. The company is holding a design competition for its new headquarters just opposite the famed 18th century Smolny Cathedral on the Neva River in historic St. Petersburg. The images below show the six designs currently in the competition.

The project was launched last year and, when complete, will consist of three interlinking towers containing offices, apartments and a hotel. The towers, which share a single podium, will form the centrepiece of the Business Bay development. Zaha Hadid’s design for the Dancing Towers confirms the role of Business Bay Development at the very forefront of Dubai’s rapidly changing future. The three towers rise above the creek and project themselves as an icon for the surrounding developments and for the gulf region.

Space Age: Beijing Airport's Olympic Terminal Looks Like UFO Mothership - Although at night it looks like a new Cylon spaceship, this is the new Terminal 3 at Beijing Airport. Like the rest of spectacular buildings being built in China’s capital, it will be finished early next year, just in time for the Olympics. According to its designers, Sir Norman Foster and partners, the “world’s largest and most advanced airport building—not only technologically, but also in terms of passenger experience, operational efficiency and sustainability—has the shape of a dragon. I don’t know about dragons or other passenger experiences, but if I ever get close, I would expect Veritech fighters coming out of it.

In the summer of 2006 the Peace Pyramid in Kazakhstan will be finished. Designed by the British architect Norman Foster and built by a Turkish construction company. The building’s purpose is to host a triennial meeting of the leaders of the various religions in the country. But obviously the iconic building also has to represent the modernization of a new oil-country. And furthermore the building is a landmark in the newly founded capital of Astana.

As many of you may have heard, Sir Norman + Partners were chosen to design the first commercial ’spaceport’ - the New Mexico Spaceport Authority Building [yes, the New Mexico Spaceport Authority really exists], run by the appropriately named Virgin Galactic. Now the design has been released [as of last week, I believe], revealing an interesting futuristic/alien looking spaceport that I think looks a lot like the cross between some extra-terrestrial mothership and a crop circle.
