Zaha Hadid has won the competition to design the new Guggenheim-Hermitage Museum in Vilnius, Lithuania, beating Daniel Libeskind and Massimiliano Fuksas.The New York-based Guggenheim Foundation will share exhibition space with the Russian Hermitage Museum at the site, which is expected to attract up to 400,000 visitors a year, and will focus on exhibitions of new media art.A joint team will now complete a feasibility study for the Hadid scheme this summer, with the institution due to open in 2011, two years before the Guggenheim’s Abu Dhabi museum.

Adidas, by Neutelings Riedijk

The Dutch architect Neutelings Riedijk send in a design that uses the iconography of the Adidas Logo. Instead of placing the 3 gyms next to each other Neutelings Riedijk have stacked them. The height of the trusses is used to accommodate dressing rooms, wellness areas and health care. Indeed, very OMA. Stacking is definitely not a very practical solution at this generous site (prolonged walking routes, expensive construction), but the resulting high building might function as a landmark at the Adidas campus. The image-language of the Adidas ‘Performance’ Logo is echoed in the three ‘bars’ that function as stairs at back, the painted bars at the side, and the stepped façade at the front.

The project was launched last year and, when complete, will consist of three interlinking towers containing offices, apartments and a hotel. The towers, which share a single podium, will form the centrepiece of the Business Bay development. Zaha Hadid’s design for the Dancing Towers confirms the role of Business Bay Development at the very forefront of Dubai’s rapidly changing future. The three towers rise above the creek and project themselves as an icon for the surrounding developments and for the gulf region.

Space Age: Beijing Airport's Olympic Terminal Looks Like UFO Mothership - Although at night it looks like a new Cylon spaceship, this is the new Terminal 3 at Beijing Airport. Like the rest of spectacular buildings being built in China’s capital, it will be finished early next year, just in time for the Olympics. According to its designers, Sir Norman Foster and partners, the “world’s largest and most advanced airport building—not only technologically, but also in terms of passenger experience, operational efficiency and sustainability—has the shape of a dragon. I don’t know about dragons or other passenger experiences, but if I ever get close, I would expect Veritech fighters coming out of it.
